As the IESS Congress comes to Toronto, we celebrate Canadian trailblazers whose contributions have advanced surgical innovation, improved patient care, and helped establish Canada as a global leader in epilepsy surgery.
Montréal: The Birthplace of Modern Epilepsy Surgery
At the Montréal Neurological Institute (The Neuro), Wilder Penfield pioneered the “Montreal Procedure” and transformed our understanding of brain function through cortical mapping.
Theodore Rasmussen further advanced epilepsy surgery through groundbreaking work on hemispherectomy and surgical outcomes.
Building on this legacy, André Olivier became a world leader in temporal lobe epilepsy surgery, helping establish Montréal as one of the foremost epilepsy surgery centres worldwide.
Toronto: A Momentum of Innovation and Leadership
Toronto’s contribution to epilepsy surgery begins with Kenneth G. McKenzie, Canada’s first neurosurgeon and a pioneer of surgical treatment for epilepsy, performing the first hemispherectomy for epilepsy.
Today, that tradition continues with James T. Rutka, whose leadership and contributions to paediatric neurosurgery and epilepsy surgery have earned international recognition.
London, Ontario: Building Canada’s Epilepsy Programs
At Western University and London Health Sciences Centre, John P. Girvin and Warren T. Blume created one of Canada’s most influential epilepsy surgery programs. Their partnership combined neurosurgical innovation with expertise in electroencephalography (EEG) and seizure localization, creating a model for multidisciplinary epilepsy care that has influenced generations of surgeons and researchers.
Vancouver: Advancing Surgical Evaluation and Epilepsy Research
At the University of British Columbia, Juhn Atsushi Wada established one of Canada’s pioneering epilepsy surgery programs and developed the internationally recognized Wada Test, which became the standard method for evaluating language dominance prior to epilepsy surgery.
